What is Carbon monoxide (CO)?
Gas

What to do if you smell gas?

  1. Turn off the gas supply at the meter or cylinders.
  2. 2.Open windows but do not turn any electrical items on or off.
  3. Call Transco 24 hr service from a telephone away from the affected area on 0800 111 999

If the leak is on your pipe work/equipment (the customer side of the meter) Transco will normally turn off the supply and advise you to contact your local CORGI registered engineer.

How often do I need to have my boiler serviced?

For safety and efficiency we recommend having the boiler serviced annually.

I'm a Landlord, what responsibilities do I have with respect to gas appliances?

Landlords are responsible for making sure that gas fittings and flues are maintained in good order, and gas appliances that they own in their residential premises, and flues, are checked for safety within every 12 months. They must also keep a record of the safety checks for at least two years and issue it to existing tenants and any new tenants before they move in.

Tenants are responsible for the maintenance and safety of appliances they own.

Electric The Law

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous gas produced when gas appliances are not working properly. It has no color, taste or smell. Symptoms of CO poisoning are very much like flu or a viral infection – namely, drowsiness, weakness, headaches, nausea and chest pains. Exposure to low levels of CO can cause brain damage and death.

If anyone experiences these symptoms in your house while using a gas appliance, stop using it and consult a doctor.

You can also fit CO detectors that will alert you if the gas is present. Detectors are no substitute for having safe appliances, but can provide a valuable warning system. CORGI only recommends using audible CO detectors with a BSI Kite mark, as opposed to the smaller, cheaper adhesive patch tests which can be inaccurate.
